Geraldine u13played a challenge game against Newtown Blues on the back pitch at Haggardstown on Monday evening and both teams treated the spectators to a really entertaining and keenly contested game. The Drogheda boys began the game very strongly playing a style of football that mirrored their senior team as they moved the ball on quickly with support players and clever runs and impressive accuracy reeling of 6 successive points. The Gers struck back with a Jamie soraghan goal and the Gers settled in to the game and began to compete well in the middle with Jaimie Soraghan and Cian Spaight matching a strong Blues midfield. Cillian Lynch began to make his mark on the game with 3 well taken points before David Clune scored the goal of the match when he cut in from 40 yards out on the left wing, leaving several Blues players in his wake before blasting to the top corner. Ryan Kellehan and Jamie Soragahan tagged on good points either side of a Cillian Lynch goal set up by Darragh Kenny to leave the Gers a couple of points up at half time. In the back line Suraj Akhal and James Obesan snuffed out attack after attack with brave defending and speedy footwork and great fielding of the ball. The second half continued with more of the same end to end football with both teams competing toughly for possession. Cian spaight covered a huge amount of ground and his efforts were rewarded with 4 second half points. Cillian lynch continued to be a thorn in the Blues defence adding 1-3 to bring his tally to 2-6. Shea Neary became more influential also moving to midfield and scored a fine point. In defence both wing half backs Shane Mullany and Eoin Rodgers were very steady and always willing to push forward. One of the keys to keeping ahead on the scoreboard was the sure footed goalkeeping of Evyn O’Callaghan whose quick and accurate kick-outs constantly found his team mates in space allowing the team to counter attack quickly. The Gers finished ahead on the scoreboard by 4-14 to 3-14 in a game that could have gone either way. Well done to the Gers lads on a great performance with every one of them battling hard and showing they are developing their skills and learning to play as a team. Thank you to the blues for a great game of football with both teams scoring some fantastic scores and moving the ball well. Thanks also to our excellent referee Cathal O’Brien who looked noticeably fitter since his return to junior football!
